Hiroshi “Hiro” Tanaka (1945–2025)

Hiroshi “Hiro” Tanaka, a decorated Vietnam War veteran and lifelong lover of nature, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, at the age of 79.

Born in San Francisco to Japanese American parents, Hiroshi’s early years were shaped by resilience. As a child, he heard stories from his parents about their internment during World War II, which instilled in him a deep commitment to justice and service. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star for bravery.

Following his military service, Hiroshi dedicated his life to his family and his passion for horticulture. He became a master gardener, teaching others how to cultivate beauty and sustainability in their own backyards. His renowned bonsai collection was a testament to his patience and artistry. For decades, he volunteered at the local botanical gardens and taught gardening workshops at community centers.

Hiroshi was a devoted husband to his late wife, Emiko, and a proud father and grandfather. He is survived by his children, Ken and Aiko, and four grandchildren. His funeral service will be held on February 16 at the Japanese Buddhist Temple in San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the San Francisco Botanical Garden.
